Frequently Asked Questions

Here's where we'll try to answer some of your potential questions.  Obviously, we can't second guess every question a potential customer may have, but hopefully the most common ones should be at least partially covered here.  If there's anything else you need to know, please just go to the "Contact" page (button "B1" on our Jukebox Menu) and drop us a line.

Biog: History of the band

"Rob Cooke & The Chefs" formed back in April 1994, to play some 1950's rock’n’roll hits at a friend's party.   The four original members (all of whom are still in the band) were at the time all experienced musicians playing in other bands, and saw the "Chefs" project purely as a "one-off" and for fun.   Since then, we have all had to leave commitments to other bands behind and focus on the Chefs due to the sheer demand, as the band has gone on to perform hundreds of gigs to diverse audiences, including performances at London's Hammersmith Palais, the Cafe Royale, the 100 Club and the Lakeside Country Club, as well as rock’n’roll festivals abroad.   We have played for weddings, birthday parties, universities, specialist jive and rock’n’roll clubs, corporate functions, rugby club dinner dances….the list is almost endless, and only serves to emphasise the timeless appeal of the music we play.

Lead singer Rob Cooke left the band in early 2001, at which point we therefore adopted the "Shakin' Chefs" name, as it no longer felt appropriate to be using his name when he wasn’t in the band.   Rob has subsequently returned, and the line-up has been supplemented since 2004 with the addition of Kev Kerrigan on guitar.

Our live set has evolved over the years; roughly 50% is still made up of classic 1950's rock'n'roll, but we have added in a few up-tempo well-known chart hits from the 60's (and even later), still played in a rock 'n' roll style.   It’s now probably more accurate to describe us as a "1950’s & 1960’s Party Band", rather than a pure rock’n’roll band.  Having said that, we're happy to change the mix of material to suit the audience, but keep the feel very much rock’n’roll and upbeat.   For examples of songs on our current play list, please see below.

Demo: How to obtain the band's demo CD

If you are interested in booking the band for a function, we could send you copy of our demo CD “Cookery Demonstration”.   This was recorded in a live environment, and so we feel it best captures the atmosphere of what prospective customers will be getting for their money.

If you would like a copy, please get in touch via our "Contact" page (button "B1" on our Jukebox Menu).  Alternatively, we are trying to place small snippets of songs to download as mp3s from our "More than words" page (button "C1" on our Jukebox Menu).   Or if neither of these options work for you, you could always come and see us playing "live"; please visit our "Gigs" page (button "B2" on our Jukebox Menu) for details of forthcoming gigs.

Whatever we say about ourselves, the proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating.  The proof of the performance is probably therefore in what people say after seeing it.

Price:  Pricing information

We don't have such a thing as a standard price, because there isn't such a thing as a standard gig.   Venues may be 5 miles - or 500 miles - from our home base, and hold 50 people or 5,000 people.  The cost to us - in terms of petrol for the van or hiring in sound and lighting equipment - varies dramatically, and if we operated a standard price for all gigs, we would end up losing money on some!

What we do, therefore, is price each gig individually.  So if you ask us how much we charge, we'll respond by asking you a load of questions, in order to be able to give you a properly thought out, appropriate (and transparent) quote.

So, if you want us to quote for a gig, please drop us a line via our "Contact" page (button "B1" on our Jukebox Menu), and give us as much information as you can in terms of the size (or capacity) of the venue, its location, how long you want us to play for, etc.  We'll get back in touch with a quote as soon as we can.
