Building a 1/15 Tiger 1

Part 3 :- Turret construction & tracks

STAGE 17

No problem with this section but I would advise these two small points. One is to put a bit of threadlock on the end of the M3 screws just in case they come loose & the second is to use a small handled or angled screwdriver as there is not much room to tighten them up in.

STAGE 18

I made the hatches up as in the diagram, but left off the handles to fit later in case they got damaged. When making the commanders hatch I found it easier to glue parts A19 & A20 that go either side of part A23 to the flap E7 first, let them set but making sure A23 moves, then glue this assembly to E11 with A24 & A25.
I then glued this to turret & filled/sanded in the gaps.

I then fitted the rest of the parts in this stage apart from the handle C24.

STAGE 19

No alterations to the stage & I then gave it a first, hand painted, coat of tank grey to check on any gaps or marks on the turret top.

 STAGE 20

It was, I think, better to paint the interior of the turret light grey (Humbrol 196) now before making and fitting the gun breach so I could get int the corners better & not spoil the job. The breach was then made up, painted in the same grey & highighted with silver/brass and the glued into place.

STAGE 21

No changes here, but make sure that the nut is glued in correctly.

STAGE 22

To make the tracks just follow the instructions. I started with 93 track segments as you can easily add and glue extra ones in instead of trying to remove them after. I would advise using a solid piece of metal or plastic to aid pushing the pins in as they do hurt after pushing in by hand after a while.
Check each track before you start to see if have to remove any flash or open up the holes as some of mine needed attention. Do not push straight down in one go, but gently push through each part. This is to see where the pin is going & to guide it into the holes. I then put, using a spare pin, some very thin superglue (I use Zap CA superthin) at the end of each pinhead & let capillery action feed it down the pin. Leave for a couple of hours & then move each track turn just to make sure they have not stuck. If they have then do not worry, just rock them backwards & forwards till them become free. I had eight do this due a very small amount of glue getting in the joint.
