Cumbrian Place Names
This list of Cumbrian place names with the correct local pronunciation
has been compiled with the help of other family historians who subscribe
to the Cumberland Mailing List @ rootsweb.
It must be emphasised that there are many local differences in Cumbrian
dialect
I would like to expand this list to cover more places and also to
include historic spellings and derivations. Please send me your contributions.

These maps, which probably date from around 1865,
show the occupiers of fields, farms and cottages between Dubmill and Beckfoot.
They may have been prepared for a valuation survey but nobody, including
the staff at the County Records Office in Carlisle, is very sure. Suggestions
would be welcome. Family names included on each map are listed in the table.

WARNING These are large files and may take
some time to download.
