John Ostle (1828-1890)
John married Rachel Harrison at Holm St Cuthbert's Church on April 18, 1857.
Rachel was born in 1835 and died in 1884. They lived first at Border Farm, then at The Nook
and finally bought New Cowper in 1868
MARY born 1858.
Gave birth to an illegitimate son, Joseph "Jose" Ostle in 1881.
According to family tradition the father was Joseph Stockdale whom
she subsequently married but Jose's name was never changed.
SARAH born 1860
Married her cousin Joseph Ostle of Mawbray Cote. Moved
to Mawbray Yard after she was widowed in 1903
JOHN born 1863
Farmed at New Cowper and later Cowgate.
RACHEL born 1868

JANE HANNAH born 1868 married Robert Littleton
John and Rachel's youngest son was THOMAS, born 1874. He married twice and moved to

John married Agnes Littleton at Aspatria Independent Chapel in 1889. His sister, Jane Hannah,
married Agnes's brother Robert.
He farmed first at New Cowper, moving later to Cowgate
He is pictured with Agnes and their second daughter, Martha, the future Mrs James Bell of
Here John (Centre) supervises Threshing Day at Cowgate
before his death in 1927.
His neighbours have all come to help with the work. The small boy on
top of the treshing
machine is the present John Ostle of Newtown.
