SUSAN BAZIN
Susan Bazin (right, with her sister, Pauline, far right) was born Susan Ostle in 1947 at Maryport.
Her father, Isaac Ostle, was a policeman and her mother, Annie, was a primary school teacher.
She obtained a B.A. (Hons.) in French at Bristol University and went on to study art in
Stuttgart, Paris, New York and London where she obtained a further B.A. (Hons.) in 'Practice
and Theory of Visual Art' at Chelsea College of Art and Design. She has a studio in Acton,
West London.

She has recently held a successful exhibition at the Artists' Gallery in Willesden, North
London. She says "My paintings are inspired by microbiology and genetics. I became fascinated
by the DNA "fingerprint" as a form of identity, there are some 'portraits' here on this theme.
These impersonal-looking bands show nothing of our appearance or ambitions or quirks of
personality, but they prove things about us which are fundamental. Minute variations in our DNA
prove that we are both unique and related: to our family members, to distant populations, to
other species." |
In December 1999, Susan and her family volunteered for a genetics project at University
College, London. The aim of the project is to search for the genes responsible for facial
features in the hope that it might be possible to reconstruct the face of a criminal from a
body sample left at a crime scene.

The laboratory supplied Susan with the family's face-scan images via computer and she used
these images for some of her work. This is a new departure and very different from her previous
work.
