I would never advise a Christian to study Theology; it ruins people’s faith.”

These were the words ringing in my ears as I left church the day before I arrived at what was then the College of Ripon and York to study Theology. And in those days what happened in Chapel or the Christian Union, and what happened in the lecture room were two different things. Thirty years later and back at York St John University, I find myself managing the Foundation Degree in Theology & Ministry!

Tutors teaching this course help students to make connections between theological study and their Christian faith, as it is lived out in the church and local community. Students report that the course ‘has changed me and my thinking, people in my parish have noticed a difference’; and ‘I’ve learnt so much, not only from the tutors, but from my fellow students, some of whom think very differently from me’.

The Foundation Degree in Theology & Ministry is used by York Diocese as part of the training for Readers, but the course is also open to people who want to explore their faith in greater depth in a supportive environment. I would advise a Christian who wants to engage with Theology to try the Foundation Degree in Theology & Ministry: it will no doubt challenge you, but will also enhance your faith.

In September, we begin by studying the New Testament: who wrote it, when, why, what kind of writing it is and how it is used today. The course starts at 6.30pm on Thursday 23 September. If you would like further information, please visit www.yorksj.ac.uk/theology or contact the Programme Administrator on 01904 876429. The closing date for applications for the autumn term is 17 September 2010.
