Welcome to the United Benefice of Bempton St Michael’s with Flamborough St Oswald’s, Reighton St Peter’s with Speeton St Leonard’s, within the Bridlington Deanery, within the Anglican Diocese of York.
The four parishes of our Benefice cover the beautiful Yorkshire coastal strip, where the Yorkshire Wolds meet the sea, between Bridlington and Filey.

At the southern end of the Benefice, Flamborough St Oswald’s (the largest parish in terms of population and the church building) extends from the point where Dane’s Dyke meets Bridlington Bay, to the south, right round the ‘Head’ to the point where the northern end of Dane’s Dyke runs out into the North Sea. The village thrives, and has its own Voluntary-Controlled Church of England Primary School, a range of shops and several pubs. In addition to St Oswald’s the village is also served by a Methodist Church

St Oswald’s Church is only half a mile north of the coastal footpath as it runs over Beacon Hill, a prominent landmark on the southern side of the Head. The church is well worth a visit, and is often open during daylight hours.

The next parish, running in a westerly direction, is Bempton St Michael’s. Like St Oswald’s, St Michael’s is essentially a twelfth-century church building, with some beautiful additions and renovations. Set at the heart of the village (which is about half the size of Flamborough), it, too, is very well worth a visit. Again, the church is usually open during daylight hours. The village has a Community Primary School and a Post Office, and is also served by a Methodist Church. While here, a visit to the seabird breeding colonies, about a mile north of the village at Bempton Cliffs, is a must.

Some three-and-a-half miles north-west of Bempton, following the main Flamborough to Reighton road (B1229), is the village of Speeton, which has its own delightful church, St Leonard’s. Set in farmland this is one of the smallest churches in Yorkshire, and also one of the most peaceful. Visitors are welcome at any time during daylight hours, and after having looked in the church, there is ample opportunity for walking on the cliff path, or down to the shore.

A mile further to the west, at the southern end of the village of Reighton, St Peter’s Church stands on rising ground, just set back from the road. The churchyard offers wonderful views of Filey Bay and Filey Brigg to the north. Although fairly unprepossessing from the outside, the church has a simple and beautiful interior.
